Feature w Grant Gunderson & Blake Jorgenson

    Issue 15.1

Bella Coola is hallowed ground for any skier who consumed the freeski revolutions of the early aughts. A filming venue for influential legends from Morrison to McConkey, the BC coastal location where dramatic peaks rise directly from saltwater fjords is an outpost rich in both legend and mystery. When the invite came from Bella Coola Heli Skiing marketing director Tim Wilkinson, our creative director knew it was time to drop everything and drop in. Crewing up with globally renown photographer Grant Gunderson as well as pro athletes Sam Cohen and McKenna Peterson, the crew of four waited out 10 days of shutdown storm conditions to land the day of the decade heli-skiing in the majestic Coast Mountains, high above saltwater fjords.

The experience was both stunning and surreal with an all-access heli pass into the most towering, glaciated mountains the author had ever skied. The trip was immediately featured on National Geographic Adventure’s social channels, but the deeper story of Bella Coola, the region, its Nuxaulk heritage and the ungodly skiing in its range was published two years later—after an extensive and exhaustive interview and research process. When the story hit The Ski Journal print alongside beautiful images from Grant Gunderson and Blake Jorgenson—with the expert editing guidance of Kade Krichko—the long-form piece delivered a reflective, bittersweet look back to global ski travel in the before times at the precipice of the pandemic.
